Build a Mini Lighthouse - Image Collection
Total Time 1 hour

This tiny lighthouse makes a nice night-light; its soft glow is just bright enough to lead your child to the safe harbor of his bed.

What you'll need

  • white plastic tape
  • 18-ounce red plastic cup with a circular bottom
  • 9-ounce clear plastic cup
  • black card stock
  • tacky glue
  • battery-operated tea light *
Helpful Tip:

* If you're burning through batteries keeping your lighthouse lit, you may want to invest in a set of rechargeable tea lights. We found a set of 12 lights for $40 at improvementscatalog.com.

How to make it

  1. Build a Mini Lighthouse Step 1

Tape three white stripes around the red cup.

  2. Build a Mini Lighthouse Step 2

Trace the bottom of the clear plastic cup onto the black card stock.

  3. Build a Mini Lighthouse Step 3

Cut out the circle you traced, along with two small rectangles for the windows and a larger rectangle for the door.

  4. Build a Mini Lighthouse Step 4

Trim the top inch or so from the clear cup so that it sits on the red cup with about a half inch of overlap.

  5. Build a Mini Lighthouse Step 5

Use tacky glue to adhere the black circle to the bottom of the clear cup.

  6. Build a Mini Lighthouse Step 6

Glue the windows and door to the red cup, set the tea light on the top, and place the plastic cup over the light.
