What you'll need

  • Simplicity pattern 9853
  • Solid orange fabric
  • Solid white fabric (for stripes)
  • Cotton batting or fiberfill
  • Orange zipper (12" or 14", according to size)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Black permanent marker
  • Sewing supplies, including scissors
  • Black make-up
  • Pattern for back fins
Helpful Tip:

1. When choosing fabric, a warm fleece would be nice in cooler climates. October 31st can get chilly! 2. You can add whatever embellishments you like using the permanent marker. We drew black lines on each of the fins to give them more definition. You may even want to draw scales on the body! 3. You may find it useful to find an image of a clownfish online to use as a reference for the white stripes. Mia Cronan is a craft freelancer and mother of five based in Ohio.

How to make it

  1. Using the pattern piece shown, cut four pieces of orange fabric for the two fins. Sew each of the two pairs together, stuff with fiberfill, and then sew along the straight side.

  2. Next, make the pajamas using the orange fabric, complete with zipper. When sewing the back seam, be sure to incorporate the fins into the seam, by pinning them between the right sides of the fabric before sewing.

  3. Using a hoodie sweatshirt, create a pattern from the hood, and make a hood using the same fabric. Attach to the neckline of the pajamas.

  4. Using the photo as reference, cut the white fabric into strips, and hot glue them to the fabric. Outline the white strips with the black permanent marker.

  5. Using a round object to trace (eg. spool of thread), draw eyes on each side of the hood near the top, for eyes.
