Glue is one the most loved arts and crafts supplies by kids everywhere, so if you are not watching, the bottle will run out very quickly in just one sitting! I know this by experience, as I gave my 3 year-old some glue and paper and the glue was gone in an instant. So that's why I started to think of more craft activities that would involve glue, lots of it, because that way I'm sure to keep them entertained and I'll be happy too.
The collages described here are very simple; they are done with cut-out construction paper in geometric shapes that the kids will recognize. Even if they know their colors and shapes, it's a good way to practice. While doing the collages, my girl wanted to grab any shape or color, but when I gave her some simple instructions, I saw that she followed them very well -- she was absorbing and learning!
It's best for kids ages 3 to 6 and will be a great activity to do after-school or in a playdate. Some of the results will be worth framing!
Start by cutting different shapes with scissors and stick with the basics: squares, triangles and circles. Use a die cut for the circles or trace a small bottle cap and cut them. Use at least 4 different construction paper colors.
Place all the shapes and colors mixed together in a little tray. Cut black construction paper to the size of a small square or rectangle (5" x 5" aprox) for the base of the collage.
Decide what kind of collage you want the kids to start making and give instructions accordingly. For the first one we started with only circles. They were told to use any color of circles, but no other shape.
The collages can be done in many different ways. You can let them glue the shapes however they want, or make a grid for them too.
Sometimes they might start a grid by themselves!
Here are different collage ideas:
-Only one shape, any color.
-Use only 2 colors, any shape.
-Use any shape, any color.
-Do repeating patterns: 1 circle any color, 1 triangle any color and so on.
There are many collage possibilities, so start with those and the kids might even have more ideas!
