What you'll need

  • File folders (three different colors)
  • Brightly colored paper (three different colors)
  • Free PDF printables
  • Acrylic craft paint
  • Scissors
  • Decoupage glue
  • Foam brush
  • Unused pencil eraser

How to make it

  1. pow! printable on red paper

Print out each of the three PDFs onto different colors of paper. Cut out the letters individually and the three explosion shapes. Decide which shape and which word will go on each folder. Try to choose colors that contrast. For example, on a red folder use a blue explosion shape and yellow letters.

  2. pencil eraser stamp dots

Make halftone-like dots with acrylic paint onto the explosion shapes by using a pencil eraser as a stamp. Stamp over all three explosion shapes and allow to dry.

  3. wham!

Use a foam brush to paint a thin layer of decoupage glue (such as Mod Podge®) onto the back of one of the explosion shapes. Place it right side up onto the front of one of the folders. Smooth out any air bubbles. Brush glue onto the backs of the letters and apply them over the explosion shape. Smooth out air bubbles. Repeat on the other folders. Allow about 5 minutes to dry a bit.

  4. brush on decoupage glue

Working on a protected work surface, place scrap paper inside the folder so that it sticks out of the sides. This will help make sure you don't accidently glue your folder shut! Use a foam brush and paint a layer of decoupage glue all over the front of the folder. Make sure your scrap paper doesn't get stuck to the folder, too! Allow to dry, at least 20 minutes. Glue should dry clear.
