Your child can let his imagination run wild with these little animals made by gluing wooden cutouts together in various configurations. All your critter carpenter needs is a variety of wooden shapes, craft glue, acrylic paints, permanent markers, and googly eyes. He can also dress up his creations with embellishments such as pipe cleaners and pieces of construction paper, if he likes.
To get started, help your child plan each critter by first trying out various arrangements of different wooden shapes. Check out our critters for inspiration, then see what you and your child can conjure up. They might be simple, like our bird and mouse, or more elaborate, like our dog and cat.
Once he's settled on a design, help him glue the pieces together. Let the glue dry, then paint the animals.
When the paint has dried, he can add marker details and glue on googly eyes and other extras, such as construction paper beaks and pipe cleaner feet or tails. If he likes, he can even turn his creations into refrigerator art or wearables by gluing on magnets or pinbacks.
