Foam Flyers
Total Time 1 hour Ages school-age

Don't toss those Styrofoam food trays! Recycle them into a fleet of UFFOs: unbelievably fun flying objects.

What you'll need

  • Clean Styrofoam trays
  • Pencil
  • Tape
  • Bendable straws
  • Rubber bands

How to make it

  1. Foam Flyers - Step 1

For each, trace and cut a plane from a clean Styrofoam tray (download our template).

  2. Foam Flyers - Step 2

With a dull pencil tip, score the top of the tail stabilizers, then fold them up. Tape a bendable straw to the bottom so that the straw extends about 3/4 inch from the front of the plane.

  3. Step 3 - Foam Flyers

To launch it, hook a rubber band around the tip of the bent straw, as shown. Hold the rubber band, gently pull back on the tail, aim up (away from people!), and let fly.
