Glittery Hair Gel

While many hair gels get their strength from synthetic chemicals, our low-tech version does the same job with the natural stickiness of gelatin and water. Just like salon products, it dries to a strong hold and easily washes out in the shower. We added glitter for some rock star flair.
What you'll need
- 2 1/2 cups water
- Medium-size mixing bowl
- 1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin
- About 4 tablespoons glitter (optional; use certified nontoxic brands)
- Whisk
How to make it
To make it: Boil the water and pour it into the bowl (a parent's job). Add the gelatin and stir until it's dissolved. Let the mixture cool to room temperature. If you are using the glitter, whisk it into the mixture, then refrigerate it for about 2 hours. Before the mixture jells completely, whisk it again to fully incorporate the glitter.
To use it: Apply the gel sparingly. Let it dry to achieve a strong hold. (If you apply too much, you may shed some glitter.) The gel will keep, covered and refrigerated, for up to a week. Whisk it before each use.
