Instead of putting candy in your valentines this year, why not give kids a fun DIY project? These King and Queen of Hearts Valentines cards come with a simple felt crown and a small baggie of sparkly sequins and foam hearts that make for an easy craft project. You can download and use my 6-year-old's drawings featured here, or have your child draw his or her own royal pair! This is a fun project to work on with your kids, and the recipient gets a fun, cavity-free treat!

What you'll need

  • pink and/or red felt (by the yard, not sheets)
  • scissors
  • sewing machine and thread
  • 8.5 x 11 printable cardstock
  • washi tape or masking tape
  • 2" x 3" resealable plastic bags
  • sequins
  • foam heart stickers
  • 5.5" x 5.5" square envelopes

How to make it

  1. Cut out the felt crowns. You will need to cut long strips of felt. My crowns for kindergarteners were 21" long and about 1.25" at their peaks. I didn't use a template for this because I wanted a freehanded, quirky look. This still sits just fine on my big, grown-up head, but if you want to double check, just  measure your child's head at the widest point and cut your crowns to that length (don't add a seam allowance, you want the crowns to be a bit smaller than the widest part of the head). Make sure you keep the peaks at about 1.25" , no matter how long your crowns are.

  2. Fold the crown in half lengthwise and sew the ends together.

Fold the crown in half lengthwise and sew the ends together. Trim excess thread and felt. Turn right-side out. Ta-da! You just made a crown!

  3. Make the cards. You can download my son's drawings, or if you have a scanner and photoediting software, you can use your own child's drawings. Have your child draw a king and a queen (without their crowns on) and write "king of hearts" and queen of hearts" under his or her picture. I made my valentines 5"x5" and printed them on cardstock to fit into 5.5" x 5.5" square envelopes.

  4. Use washi tape to attach the crown to the back of the card.

Attach the crowns to the cards. place the crown on the king or queen's head and fold the edges around the back of the card. Use a generous amount of wash tape or masking tape to stick the crown to the back of he card.

  5. DIY goodie bags

Make the DIY goodie bags. Print out the PDF with the instructions "decorate your crown! just add glue!" onto cardstock or paper and cut them down into individual pieces. Have your child help you fill 2" x 3" reclosable plastic bags with a pinch or two of sequins and a few foam heart stickers. Add the instruction tag and seal the bags.

  6. Place the valentines and the goodie bags into an envelope and seal it with a kiss!
