What you'll need

  • Lanny and Wayne's Elf Hat Garland Template
  • Scissors
  • Green fleece (felt will work, too)
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Monofilament or clear beading cord (.012 inch/.30 mm or a similar thickness works well)
  • Clear (crystal) pony beads
  • Sewing needle with an eye large enough to thread two pieces of the monofilament through
  • Red pompoms (1/2 inch or similar size)
  • Low-temperature glue gun
  • Thin red ribbon

How to make it

  1. Print the template and use it to cut out a green fleece semicircle for each elf hat you plan to make. Set aside the fleece cutouts.
Tip: Once you've cut out the first fleece semicircle, you can use it as a pattern for cutting out all the rest, since it's even easier to pin than the paper.

  2. Elf Hat Garland

Create a hanger for each hat by first cutting a 10-inch length of monofilament and sliding a clear pony bead onto the center.

  3. Elf Hat Garland

Gather the two ends of the monofilament and thread them through the eye of the sewing needle, as shown.

  4. Elf Hat Garland

Sew through the center of a red pompom, pulling the monofilament through. Remove the needle and tie the two strands together with a double overhand knot an inch from the ends. Trim the ends close to the knot and then slide the pompom down to rest just above it.

  5. Elf Hat Garland

Now it's time to make the hats. Working with one piece of fleece at a time, fold over one third of the semicircle and apply hot glue, as shown.

  6. Lanny's and Wayne's Elf Hat Garland

Fold the opposite end of the fleece over onto the glued portion to stick it in place and form a mini cone.

  7. Lanny's and Wayne's Elf Hat Garland

To shape the cone into an elf hat, apply a thin line of hot glue along the outer seam, as shown. Immediately pinch the fleece on both sides of the seam into the glue to create a more tapered and less floppy cone.

  8. Hot glue a pompom onto the top of each hat.

Finally, thread a long length of thin red ribbon through the pony beads at the tops of the hangers. Slide the beads along the ribbon to space the hats evenly apart, and your garland is ready to hang.
