Minnie's Polka Dot Eggs
Total Time 1 hour Ages 2 to 4

Inspired by the character: Minnie Mouse Coming from a family of egg farmers, young Minnie Mouse would have had no shortage of Easter eggs to decorate when she was growing up. But of all the coloring methods she may have employed, here's a technique that she and her fans would agree yields eggs-traordinary results: using sticker dots and dye to transform a batch of plain white eggs into a basketful of pretty, polka-dotted ones.

What you'll need

  • Hardboiled, white-shelled eggs
  • Small sticker dots, about 3/8-inch in diameter (larger stickers won't adhere well to the curved eggshells)
  • Easter egg dye
  • Spoon
  • Cup or mug
  • Paper towels

How to make it

  1. Apply stickers to the hardboiled eggs to create a polka-dot pattern. Be sure to press firmly, using the surface of your thumbnail if necessary to rub the edges of the stickers to prevent dye from bleeding underneath them. (Note: If the eggs have been refrigerated after cooking, you'll need to let them warm a bit at room temperature. Otherwise, condensation on the shells may prevent the stickers from adhering.)

  2. Mix the dye with water in the cup or mug according to the package directions.

  3. Use the spoon to lower each egg into the dye and leave it submerged for several seconds. Remove the egg before the stickers soften and absorb dye. Use a paper towel to pat dry the shell.

  4. Gently peel off the stickers. If you have trouble, try running a thin stream of cold water over them until they soften, and then rub away the paper with your fingertip.
