Scented Paper Flowers
Total Time 30 minutes or less Ages school-age

When Bambi unknowingly called a young skunk "Flower," the very notion sent Thumper into a fit of laughter. But that didn't stop the little striped critter from eagerly embracing the name. Inspired by Flower's moniker, here's a Mother's Day gift that everyone will agree makes good scents: a bouquet of black-and-white perfumed paper flowers.

What you'll need

  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Lightweight scrapbook paper in patterns of black and white
  • Small jar lid (about 1 3/4 to 2 inches wide)
  • Pencil
  • Craft scissors (optional)
  • Pushpin
  • Thin flexible cloth floral wires (about 18 inches long)
  • Buttons
  • Straight scissors
  • Perfume

How to make it

  1. For each flower, cut five 2 1/2-inch squares from a sheet of scrapbook paper. Stack the squares and trace the jar lid on the top square.

  2. Cut along the trace line, going through all 5 layers at once. Use craft scissors, if you like, to create a decorative edge.

  3. Use the pushpin to poke a pair of holes through the center of the stack of circles. Wiggle the pushpin in each hole to enlarge the opening enough for the floral wire to fit through.

  4. Step 4

Choose a button to serve as the flower center. Bend a floral wire in half and thread the ends through the buttonholes and then through the holes in the paper circles. Thread on another button and slide it up against the bottom of the flower.

  5. Step 5

Tightly twist the wire ends together to form the flower stem.

  6. Step 6

Snip petals in the paper around the flower center.

  7. Then lightly spritz the finished blossom with perfume.
