This desk is pretty and practical, with built-in holders for little essentials. Plus, there's a bit of extra storage space in the file boxes hidden beneath the lift-off top.

What you'll need

  • 4 cardboard file boxes (set the lids aside)
  • Double-sided foam tape
  • 36- by 48-inch corrugated display board
  • Screwdriver
  • Yardstick
  • Hot glue
  • Pencil
  • 3 plastic cups
  • Craft knife
  • 1 3/4 yards of cotton material (45 inches wide), cut lengthwise into 2 sections measuring 21 inches wide
  • Fabric flowers
  • Small, round unbreakable mirror
  • Optional, for stool: sturdy plastic trash can, cardboard, cushion fabric

How to make it

  1. Supports Create a stack of 2 file boxes, one with its open end facing the floor and one with its open end facing up, by sandwiching strips of foam tape between them. Repeat for the second support and set both aside.

  2. Step 2 - Sweet Vanity

Top With the display board facedown, score a line with the screwdriver and a yardstick as shown, parallel to the existing fold, then fold along this line. Unfold it, cover both sections with hot glue, and press them together to create a double-layered top.

  3. Step 3 - Sweet Vanity

Backboard and "Cup Holders" Set the top on the supports. Fold the remaining, single-layer flap up at a 90-degree angle (lean it against a wall for support). Pencil the outline of the backboard, then trace the cup openings (as shown above), placing them so the cups will clear the boxes underneath. Remove the top and use a craft knife to cut out the circles, cutting V inch inside the lines so that the cups' lips will catch and hold. Cut out the backboard.

  4. Step 4 - Sweet Vanity

Skirt Working along the long cut edges of both pieces of fabric, hot-glue the skirt to the underside of the vanity top along the sides and front. Make small gathers, securing them with dabs of glue, before affixing them at 1 1/2-inch intervals.

  5. Finishing Touches Glue the flowers to the mirror, then affix the mirror to the backboard with foam tape. Insert the cups in their openings. Use any stool, or create one from an overturned plastic trash can, as we did. For a seat cushion, cut a cardboard circle, cover it with the cushion fabric, and glue it to the can.
