Want to make a family gift that gets down to brass tacks? Ornament a wooden box (available at craft stores), with little pieces of hardware scavenged from Grandpa's tool box. Our bejeweled picture frame takes advantage of elegant baubles grandma might be willing to donate from her jewelry box.

What you'll need

  • Nuts, bolts, and other small hardware
  • Acrylic paint and paintbrush
  • Small wooden box
  • Foam brush
  • Strong craft glue

How to make it

  1. Wash the hardware with soap and water and set it aside to dry.

  2. Paint the box inside and out, taking care to avoid the hinges.

  3. When the paint is completely dry, use the foam brush to apply a thick layer of glue to its top.

  4. Press on the hardware. Let the glue set before using the box.
