Woody Easter Egg
Total Time 1 to 2 weeks Ages school-age

As the leader of Andy's toys, Woody never shies away from going the eggs-tra mile. This Easter decoration, inspired by the trusty pull-string cowboy, features a mini doll face for kids to color in — just like Woody's hand-painted one.

What you'll need

  • Hardboiled white egg (or wooden egg), painted brown
  • Cardboard tissue tube (1 1/4 inch or so in diameter)
  • Scissors
  • Heavyweight craft paper (a yellow-and-red pattern for Woody's shirt and brown for his hat)
  • Fine-tipped black marker
  • Stapler
  • Paper hole punch
  • Glue stick
  • Glue dots
  • Black-and-white cowhide patterned craft paper (or white craft paper with black patches colored on)
  • Scrap of red fabric and small red rubber band for Woody's neckerchief
  • White cardstock
  • Template for Woody Easter Egg
  • Colored pencils
  • Black marker
  • White craft paint
  • Toothpick

How to make it

  1. Woody egg step 1

Cover the tube with the patterned paper. Then glue a thin vertical strip of the same paper to the front of the tube for a button band. Use the paper hole punch to create "buttons," and draw on buttonholes with the tip of the marker. Glue the buttons in place. Then wrap a strip of the cowhide paper three quarters of the way around the tube for Woody's vest.

  2. woody egg step 2a

Fold the red fabric scrap into a neckerchief and bind the ends together with the rubber band.

  3. woody egg step 3

Slip the neckerchief onto the top of the tube. Set the egg atop the tube, with the narrower end down.

  4. woody egg step 4

Print the template on white cardstock and cut out the pieces. Shade in the face, mouth, tongue, and eyebrows with colored pencils. (Tip: To achieve a more opaque look, you can periodically dip the pencil points in water.)

  5. woody egg step 5

For the eyes, simply color them in, or make a 3-dimensional pair out of buttons. To do this, just use the hole punch to create two brown circles and then draw an eye pupil on each one with black marker. Use the tip of a toothpick dipped in white craft paint to add a gleam to each eye. Glue the circles onto the buttons and then glue the button eyes onto the paper face.

  6. Use glue dots to stick the face to the front of the egg, but leave the chin free to jut out over the neckerchief.

  7. woody egg step 7

Use the hat template pieces to cut out the shapes from brown craft paper.

  8. woody egg step 8

Shape the side band into a ring the size of the hat top.

  9. woody egg step 9

Then glue the top in place.

  10. woody egg step 10

Next, fold the brim circle in half and cut a series of triangular tabs in the center.

  11. woody egg step 11

Center the hat top on the brim and then flip the hat over and glue the tabs to the inside.

  12. woody egg step 12

Glue the hatband in place above the brim.

  13. woody egg step 13

Finally, stick the hat to the top of the egg.
