Iron-fortified breakfast cereal
Total Time 30 minutes or less Ages all-ages

Have you ever read "fortified with iron" on your cereal box and wondered what that means?

I have seen that banner on breakfast cereal boxes my whole life but never thought about it.

When we tried this at home, I don't know who was more surprised - me or the kids!

What you'll need

  • Cereal that is fortified with Iron
  • Strong Magnet

How to play

  1. Step 1

Most cereals have extra iron in them, but check the ingredients to make sure yours does, or this won't work!

  2. Step 2

Now, let your child examine the cereal. This is an important step for any science exploration.

  3. Step 3

They're probably going to want to try it, too.

  4. Step 4

Now, take the magnet, and run it along the cereal flakes.

Were you able to pick any of them up?

  5. Step 5

We weren't. Our magnet was totally clean when we were done.

  6. Step 6

So we crunched up the cereal into little bits.

  7. Step 7

Then we tried the magnet again-- making sure to get it really close without actually touching the cereal.

  8. Step 8

And success! We picked up little bits of iron flakes that were in the cereal!

    How cool is that?
