For a mermaid exploring an old shipwreck, manmade objects such as kitchen utensils, candlesticks, and books may seem far more valuable than they do to the people who routinely use them every day -- just as shells, sea glass, and other ocean souvenirs are exciting for beach combers to find. If your family doesn't live near enough to a beach to explore, your child can easily fill a whole treasure box with a bunch of glittery starfish like these.
Using a glue stick, adhere a sheet of construction paper to the back of a piece of fine grit sandpaper.
Draw starfish shapes on the sandpaper with a dull pencil and then cut them out.
Working with one starfish at a time on top of a waxed paper or newspaper-covered surface, brush a thin coat of craft glue on the sandpaper surface and then sprinkle on glitter. Tap the bottom of the starfish to shake off excess glitter and let the glue dry thoroughly.
