squid cake

This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by jenkinder from Bellevue, Nebraska: giant squid protecting its treasure from pirates

What you'll need

  • I just used the sprinkle cake mix from Duncan Hines
  • premade fondant
  • homemade buttercream icing-1/2 C butter. 1lb powdered sugar. 1/2 tsp vanilla. 3Tbsp milk

How to make it

  1. bake cake according to directions on box in a 9x13 pan. allow to cool completely.

  2. blend 1/2 softened butter, 1lb powdered sugar, 1/2tsp vanilla and 3 Tbsp milk until smooth. add Wilton blue dye till happy with color and ice cake-(reserve some blue for edging) sprinkle with edible blue glitter to add sparkle to the water.

  3. Dye fondant to desired color. copper+pink for squid. dark green for seaweed. copper for starfish. I took a sugar cone and molded the fondant to look like a squid. I added pirates, boat and treasure chest from my kids toys. create seaweed-use toothpicks to attach to cake. place starfish in corners. lastly use reserved blue icing to decorate the bottom using tip #16"
