Cake in The Hat Cake

This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by moonbug99 from San Diego, California: This is a 6-layer cake with color flow pieces and topped with a chocolate fish bowl and a fondant fish. I made it for my neighbors twins in 2007.

What you'll need

  • This is a simple box cake in vanilla with home-made buttercream frosting. The figures were made out of color flow and melted chocolate. The fish bowl is melted white chocolate and the goldfish was made from dyed fondant.

How to make it

  1. I traced the figures from the birthday invitation card after enlarging them on my scanner. Place the image under waxpaper, then place colorflow icing in piping bag and trace outline and fill in entire image area 10 days ahead, allow them to dry completely. Then peel off the paper, very carefully. Then coat the back in melted chocolate and lay a sucker stick in the soft chocolate to stand in cake later. Draw details on with food markers.

  2. Bake 5 six inch single layer round cake and one 8 inch. Place the 8 inch on the bottom cover with a layer of icing, place a cardboard round between each layer. I used dowels to support construction between every other layer and icing between every layer. Then carve the angle of the hate your want. Finally run a dowel through the whole stack.

  3. Color some icing red and using a tip 18 pipe the entire cake in red and white stars. Trace the lines in small black icing.

  4. Making the bowl and the fish. I used a small bowl and coated it with plastic wrap. Then melted some white chocolate and coated the bowl. I'd place it in the freezer, repeat several times to get a strong bowl. Make a whole in the bowl large enough for the dowel coming from the top of the cake with rest in it when assembled. The fish in colored fondant and hand molded into the shape. Detailed drawn on with food markers.

  5. Place the colorflow figures on the cake with the sucker sticks. Then place the bowl on top of the stack. Use fondant to make the blue fondant balls to look like water. Attach in bowl with blue piping gel. Then place fish on the remaining stick coming through the bowl."
