This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by mommy2owen from Dalton, Georgia: This cake was a huge hit with everyone, but really is super easy to make. I had a lot of fun making it.
Remove enough batter to make two cupcakes or mini ball pan cakes and divide remaining batter among two bundt pans and bake.
Make sure the bottoms of the bundt cakes are level, then place bottoms together to form the pumpkin. Ice with orange buttercream. Use a dowel rod to imprint the impressions of a pumpkin around the sides. Pipe on leaves and vines with green icing and a leaf tip such as 352 and a small round tip like a tip 6 or 7.
Place the two mini ball cakes or cupcakes on top of the pumpkin...one down in the hole and one up and in front, making the body and head of the kitten. The cupcake down in the hole will stay in place on its on. The other, secure in place with a skewer. Ice both pieces black, then cover them both with pull out hair/grass tip.
To make the ears, use a large tip, such as a tip 10 or 12. Apply heavy pressure, then release the pressure as you pull up. You should have two little triangles now. Place pink icing or fondant triangles in the centers.
For the eyes, use a tip 12 and white icing. Pipe on two dots, dip your finger in cornstarch and pat the dots flat, then make the pupils with smaller tips and flatten as well. The nose can be done in a similar fashion with pink icing or a triangle of pink fondant.
To make the paws, cut a large marshmallow in half, secure them in place with toothpicks and cover with the black pull out hair tip.
Pipe on the cheeks with black icing and a tip 12, pat the cheeks down just a little with your finger dipped in cornstarch and then stick in uncooked spaghetti for whiskers and your Halloween kitty is complete!
