Happy Fish Cake

This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by mom2steviemma from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania: I created this fish cake for a friend who's daughter was having a water party with no specific character. It was a big hit!

What you'll need

  • 3 cake mixes
  • 2 tubs of buttercream frosting
  • fondant
  • colored sugar crystals
  • black decorators gel

How to make it

  1. Prepare cake mixes according to instructions. 2 of the cake mix batters will be combined and poured into a greased and floured 12" cake pan. Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes or until it tests done. Use the remaining cake batter to bake an 8" cake according to directions.

  2. Once cakes have cooled, cut crescent shapes from both sides of the 8" cake (start w/ the crescents large as you can always trim excess away). Place crescent shapes against the 12" cake to form the fish's tail. Trim until you have the desired size and shape you like. Tint your frosting the desired shade and frost entire cake.

  3. Roll out fondant and cut two circles for the white eyes. Tint a small amount of fondant a contrasting color and cut various size circles for the fish's spots. Use black decorators gel to make the smile and centers of eyes. Optional, use colored sugar to add some glimmer to the tail. I covered the cake board in a polka dot wrapping paper to add to the fun theme. You can also make this cake with smaller cake pans for the same effect!"
