Holiday Garland Cookies
What's your Take?

Hang this Christmas greeting on a mantel for everyone to see and sample. The foundation of this recipe is the versatile dough that can be customized to create chocolate, colored, striped, or marbleized cookies.

What you'll need

  • Cookie cutters or cardboard patterns for letters, A,C, E, H, I, M, R, S, T, and Y (the tops of each letter should be at least 1/2 inch wide)
  • Best-ever sugar cookie dough
  • Drinking straw
  • Frosting
  • Ribbon or yarn
Helpful Tip:

Repoke the holes immediately after baking to ensure that they are big enough for threading with string or licorice.
Instead of rolling out your dough on a floured surface, roll it out between waxed paper. The cookies will stay moist because extra flour is not incorporated during the rolling process.

How to make it

  1. Roll out the cookie dough and cut out the letters that spell Merry Christmas. Using the straw, punch out holes from the tops of each cookie. Bake as directed. Decorate each letter with stripes, polka dots, or patterns made of colored frosting. String the cookie on the ribbon, tie in place, and hang.
