Hummingbirds like Pocahontas' friend Flit have wings that beat an average of 50-plus times per second when they fly. And some hummingbirds are so small that, if you're lucky enough to catch sight of one, you might actually think it's a bee. Invite your child to size up this edible hummingbird nest, and she'll find a pair of tiny candy eggs that are just about the same dimensions as the real thing.
What you'll need
- 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
- Microwavable bowl
- Wooden spoon
- 1 tablespoon hot water
- 1/3 cup dry chow mein noodles
- Rubber spatula
- Waxed paper
- Pretzel sticks
- Tic Tac candies
How to make it
Microwave the white chocolate chips for ten second intervals until they soften enough to stir into a frosting. Add the tablespoon of hot water and stir until the mixture is smooth.
Immediately add the chow mein noodles to the bowl and use a rubber spatula to gently fold them into the melted white chocolate.
Scrape the mixture from the bowl onto a sheet of waxed paper and separate the mound into five equal-size piles.
Working with clean hands, loosely shape each pile into a nest by using your thumbs to create a shallow depression in the center.
Before the white chocolate sets up, place each nest atop a pair of pretzel sticks arranged to resemble a small forked branch.
Finally, fill each nest with two Tic Tac eggs.
