This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by nauzel from austin, Texas: I created a pirate ship cake for my son Jacob's 4th birthday. Every pirate ship needs a name - it's 'The Screaming Audrey' in honor of his baby sister.
I made 2 - 9" square cakes. I cut them in half horizontally and used the front corner as the front of the ship. I cut off the sides and used those for pieces in layer #3.
I continued to layer cake and icing for 4 layers, using extra pieces to build the upper deck in the back. I covered with frosting and refrigerated overnight. The next day I covered with frosting again and dragged a cake decorating comb over it to get the texture of wood logs.
I decorated with gummy 'rum bottles', chocolate malt ball cannonballs, Rolo canons, Pirouette Cookies for gunwales, Root Beer barrel candies, a sugar wafer gangplank and wooden skewers and craft paper for the masts and flags. I added plastic pirate figures, of course."
