Little Ladybug Cake

This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by leedsy from Northfield, New Jersey: For our daughters first birthday, we threw a ladybug party. It was so easy to make. I baked it in a large glass mixing bowl and decorated!

What you'll need

  • Boxed cake mix
  • vanilla icing
  • red food coloring
  • black fondant
  • black decorator tube icing
  • chocolate peppermint patties
  • small white candy coated peppermint patties or junior mints

How to make it

  1. Bake cake mix according to box in a 2 qt. oven safe mixing bowl. Cool.

  2. Dye icing red and cover the whole cake. Next, roll out fondant and cut into a half circle for the head and long triangles for the antennae. This is where the mixing bowl you baked in comes in handy. Lay it on the fondant top down and trace edge with a knife or fondant cutting tool to make the half circle. Place on the front of the cake.

  3. Using the tube of black icing place a dab on the flat side of white mints and place on head for eyes. Place a black icing dot on each eye. Using the black icing, draw a line from the middle of the top of head straight down to the back side. Now take the chocolate covered peppermint patties and press here and there into red icing for dots on the back."
