Motorcycle Cake

This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by hyperhypo_pj from Orange Park, Florida: This cool cake will make Dads and even moody teenagers smile!

What you'll need

  • Any Boxed Cake Mix
  • 1 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 1 tsp butter flavoring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 cups (2 lbs) sifted confectioner's sugar
  • 4 tbs milk

How to make it

  1. Bake cake according to package directions. Bake in a half sheet or whole sheet cake pan depending on the size of cake you need. You may need to use more than one cake mix if using a large pan (check the pan instructions).

  2. While the cake bakes, make the icing. Sift the sugar into a large bowl and add the shortening, vanilla, butter flavoring and milk. Beat with an electric mixer on medium high until smooth. Add more milk if the icing is too thick or not blending well. Color batches of the icing using food coloring or icing colorings from a craft store.

  3. After the cake cools for 15 minutes, remove from the pan. Don't ice the cake until it has cooled completely.

  4. Ice the top and sides of the cake with white icing. Using a toothpick or a food coloring pen, lightly draw out your motorcycle design onto the cake. Using the colored icings and cake decorating tips, ice according to your chosen design. I used all icing for my decoration, but feel free to use everyday kitchen items to make decorating easier, such as rope licorice for the wheels and parts."
