Patches Cake

This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by leesyjo from sacramento, California: A replica of my daughters favorite stuffed horse she named "Patches."

What you'll need

  • Any cake mix or recipe x2, plus more for small bowl cake
  • 1 frozen pound cake block
  • 1 box Twinkies
  • chocolate and vanilla frosting
  • 1 pink starburst
  • black shoelace licorice or black icing

How to make it

  1. Bake 2 cakes in 9x13" pans. Fill a 9" (approx.) glass bowl 1/4 full of cake batter, and bake. Cut rectangle cakes in a top view of horse (peanut shape) and stack, icing between layers to secure. Add upside-down bowl cake to the top of horses backside, cut body to a smooth shape.

  2. Cut frozen pound cake block to form the head. It's easier to cut while frozen, then thaw. A short wooden dowel/stick may be used to secure head, but not needed if neck is properly stacked. Use Twinkies for legs and arms, cutting in half to connect. Use excess cake from pans to form wedges for the neck, hind legs and ears. Secure ears with toothpicks.

  3. Frost cake to look like a Painted horse. Using a pastry bag or ziplock with a hole in the corner, pipe extra frosting to form mane and tail. Cut pink Starburst in half and shape into nostrils. Use shoelace licorice or black icing for eyes and smile.
