What you'll need

  • Chocolate Sour Cream Cake (x4)
  • 1 box devil's food cake
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 lg box chocolate pudding (not instant)
  • 1 bag chocolate chips
  • 3 eggs
  • cup vegetable oil
  • 1 TBS vanilla
  • cup water
  • Frosting (x5)
  • 1 cup butter or shortening
  • 1 lb confectioners sugar
  • 3 TBS milk or water
  • 2 TBS egg white powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 3 TBS brown sugar
  • Candy for treasure chest*

How to make it

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, hand mix all ingredients except water. Add water and make sure that consistence of batter is thick but not dry. Put mixture into greased sheet cake and one small 1/2 ball pan. Cook sheet cake for 45-55 minutes and ball cake for 25 minutes. Check with toothpick, if inserted to center of cake and comes out dry, take out of oven. Cool completely.

  2. Frosting- combine butter, milk and vanilla. Then add egg white powder and confectioners sugar. Color: 2 TBS red, rest- 1/8 green, 1/2 blue, and 3/8 dirt/sand color. Royal Icing (prepare one day before)- Whip egg white until stiff, add lemon juice and confectioners sugar. Color green. Cover a plastic bottle with plastic wrap. Pipe green royal icing using leaf tip to make palm tree tops. Can also make extra leaves to use as ferns. Set aside.

  3. Frost 2/3 of sheet cake with Blue frosting, saving a little to make the waterfall. Cover remainder of cake with sand frosting. Put 1/2 ball cake in place on sand frosting at edge of the blue. Carve out waterfall track and decorate with blue, then cover hill with sand color frosting. Cover blue frosting with piping gel tinted blue. Use grass tip and green frosting on hill. Put leaves in place. Sprinkle sand frosting with brown sugar.

  4. Construct treasure chest- 2 mini Hersey Bars, glued together at angle w/royal icing. Paste mini skittles onto treasure chest w/icing. Pirate Flag- 1 square of chocolate pipe white royal icing for skull and cross bones. Use royal icing to glue to Nestle Crunch stick. Palm Trees- Glue palm tree tops, made previously, onto top of Nestle Crunch Sticks. Put in place. Add figurines. Create map trail with red. Extra frosting to trim border"
