Slithery snake cupcake cake

This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by Mysonshines from Greensboro, North Carolina: He's BIG! 40 cupcakes made this fella 5 ft long! His length amazed & amused the kids & he was easy to make, too. Parents liked no cutting/forks or mess.

What you'll need

  • CHOCOLATE CAKE INGREDIENTS
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • BUTTERCREAM ICING INGREDIENTS
  • butter
  • confectionary sugar
  • pinch salt
  • milk
  • vanilla

How to make it

  1. One side of an appliance box (free for the asking at the store) was cut for the base. I lined the cupcakes up in 2's and 3's on the cardboard for the body and a wider triangle for his head, then I traced my lines onto the cardboard with pencil, trimmed out and covered with freezer wrap paper. A teeny bit of icing under each cupcake kept them in place for travel.

  2. After the cupcakes were arranged closely together in the shape of the snake I squeezed buttercream icing in zigzags all over the top. With a spatula I smoothed the icing and built a little icing up in a bump for his eyes.

  3. I used 2 small fondant balls for his eyes and colored them with icing markers. Fruit roll-up made the tongue
