This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by Chef_Libby from Henryetta, Oklahoma: This eye catching cake looks much more difficult than it really is to make and all your guests will appreciate its simplicity.
Bake cake mixes according to package directions in a 6', 8', and 10' pans. Allow to cool and level with a bread knife. Frost cakes with a thin layer of butter cream frosting. Roll out a portion of the fondant and cover each layer individually. Carefully stack layers together, insert a wooden dowel down the center to maintain stability.
Color a portion of the fondant black and cut into strips measured to fit the base of the 8' and 6' layers. Color a portion of fondant red.
To make roses, start with a small marble size piece of red fondant. Shape into a cone that sits even on flat surface. Shape another piece into a rectangle, place around top of cone leaving a small opening. For petals, start with a marble size piece of fondant & work with fingers on flat surface. Petals should be quarter size for inner petals & larger for outer petals. Continue for 8 roses. Dust with shimmer powder. Attach to cake with frosting."
