topsy turvy girly cake

This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by sreale1014 from Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania: pink and white topsy turvy cake for a hip 1 year old

What you'll need

  • 5 boxes cake mix
  • buttercream icing
  • rolled fondant
  • icing color gel paste
  • wooden dowel rods
  • bottom board
  • cardboard cake circles
  • wired gumpaste stars

How to make it

  1. bake cakes according to directions on box using 2 10" round pans, 2 8" round pans and 2 6" round pans. Let cool and freeze overnight. Stack 2 10" cakes using buttercream as filling. Do the same for 8" and 6" cakes. Freeze for 20 minutes. Carve top of each cake into a slant. On 10" cake, carve a flat round surface into slant for 8" cake to sit in. Do the same so the 6" can fit into the 8" flat. Crumb coat all cakes with buttercream. Freeze

  2. Dowel bottom two tiers of your cake for stacked construction. Color fondant appropriately. Cover each tier of cake in fondant. Cut out the circles where the next tier of the cake will sit. Decorate each tier separately using stripes, circles, etc. Write on gum paste starts with mixture of gel coloring and clear vanilla. Let dry. Begin stacking cakes with the top slants pointing in opposite directions. Dowel rod all tiers together.

  3. Roll fondant into small balls to place around border of cake. Once completed, write on cake and push wired stars into top of cake.
