This Great Cake Contest entry was submitted by McCulleyFamilyRocks from San Rafael, California: A fun cake for a pirate party.
Bake 1 cake in rectangular 9x13 pan. Bake 5 - 6" round cakes. Cut rectangle cake in half. Now you have two 9x6 1/2 pieces. Stack with frosting in between layers and frost entire cake. Place on display tray. Place two lollipop sticks @ 1/3 & 2/3 positions in cake, about the half way mark in the cake, so they stick about 1/2 inch above top of cake. Add treasure, leaving the back edge of the cake empty of treasure.
Lid assembly: Cut a piece of cardboard the same size as your treasure chest bottom, cover in foil. Cut 3 holes along the long side of the cardboard. This is where you will secure the lid of the chest to the bottom of the chest. Cut round cakes in half. Lay halves side by side securing with frosting between layers and bamboo skewers.
Place lid in position on chest base. Poke lollipop sticks through cake and holes in cardboard support into the chest bottom. Frost the remainder of the lid. Use piping bag to make band on chest and add candy buttons for rivets. Add additional treasure. Sprinkle brown sugar on your cake tray for sand. Add more treasure and plastic crabs, turtles, treasure to complete the treasure chest on the beach feeling."
