It's summertime again -- my favorite time of the year! I could list a thousand reasons why I love summer, but when it comes right down to it… it's because we have time! There are more hours of daylight to do all the things we love and fewer structured things planned for every minute of the day.
My kids know that they have certain things they have to do in the morning -- math exercises, reading, piano and household chores. But when they're finished, they pretty much get to do whatever they want. Some days we're out and about at the beach or amusement parks, and some days we spend the whole day at home playing with friends or out in the pool.
There is one huge challenge though when it comes to our loose summertime schedule: It's really easy for me to lose track of time! My daily schedule no longer has the natural rhythm that comes with school being in session. We'll be busy doing something fun and before I know it, all the kids are hungry and need to be fed, the baby needs to be changed or put down for a nap, Jonathan needs to be reminded to go to the bathroom, and Kaitlyn's blood sugar needs to be checked! At that point we all go from being relaxed and happy to being cranky and stressed out! It's really difficult to find a balance between having a loose and easy schedule and keeping track of all the basics.
I recently found a great solution to my predicament. My sister told me about a great baby product that has helped me tremendously! It's a simple timer that is designed to help new parents keep track of how long it's been since the baby has been changed, fed, awake or asleep. I first started using it when my baby was born, but soon decided to tailor it to my own needs. I now have a specific timer to help me remember when I need to feed or change the baby, take Jonathan to the bathroom, and check Kaitlyn's blood sugar levels.
I'm usually skeptical of these kinds of gadgets, but I love this one! It's easy to use and small enough to fit in my pocket. Now I'm able to relax and enjoy the summer without losing track of the everyday essentials!
