We talked to parents of children with type 1 diabetes to find out what they love most about their pediatric endocrinologists. Read on to get some ideas about qualities other families appreciate in their doctors.
Willingness to Listen
"Our doctor is very patient, always responds to my needs and questions, and is very considerate and knowledgeable. I can ask anything, and she takes the time to not only answer me, but listen. She is an amazing endo and her kind nature is most appreciated for a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes."
--Michelle, Fort Worth, Texas, mom of Cooper
Connection With My Child
"We love our doctor. At our first visit with him, we arrived with all of our pump data printed out. But rather than focusing on the data alone, our doctor instead talked with my son. He asked when he felt good, when he felt bad and what feeling bad was like. He made him laugh and engaged him. Our doctor is hands-on, incredibly smart, and engaging. He has empowered my son to manage this disease."
--Starr, Aurora, Ill., mom of Hugh
Attention to Detail
"We love our doctor! She always has a smile on her face when she comes in to see us. I feel like she knows us even though she sees many, many patients every day. I love that she spends plenty of time every appointment analyzing Kaitlyn's numbers and making little tweaks to fine-tune her basal rates and carb ratios. She really knows her stuff, and her office staff is organized and efficient. Every minute of our hour-plus drive to get there is well worth it!"
--Kim, Southern California, mom of Kaitlyn
Kindness and Patience
"We have the most amazing endocrinologist ever. Our doctor really takes time to listen. When my son, Connor, began having complications shortly after his type 1 diagnosis, she was quick to offer medical advice and worked with our insurance company to get him on a pump. Connor has also had other chronic health conditions that make his diabetes more difficult to manage, but our doctor continues to rally and help us manage each medical issue. She goes above and beyond. She has given me her personal cell phone number and recently, when my son had to travel many miles away to see a specialist, she gave me her frequent flier miles so that we could fly rather than drive, because she knew the drive would be difficult on my son. You just don't find doctors like her anymore."
--Vangelia, Lubbock, Texas, mom of Connor
"My son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 4. It was a rough diagnosis to hear, but his endocrinologist, our doctor, made the transition into being the parent of a child with diabetes less painful. She is always sure to include him in conversations regarding his care. One of the first things she said to us was 'You know all those hopes and dreams you have for Philip? They can still happen.' Because she is so positive about things, it makes it easy to have the same attitude. I feel like we can go to her if we have any questions, and she welcomes email as well as phone calls. I feel like we are part of a team in helping Philip be the healthiest kid he can be, and that makes the whole thing so
--Astrid, Colchester, Vt., mom of Philip
